Children of Men

Finally a new review - I know you folks have been waiting for a while. Children of Men is a great film and although not strictly a post-apocalyptic its still well worth your attention.

Check out what I found linking this film with 2019: After the Fall of New York and Picasso!

The Last Man

An independent production of Mary shelly's long lost novel The Last Man is now in post-production after seven months of filming in the US. Set in the modern world the apocalyptic story follows a plague that wipes out 98% of the population, and has horrible effects on the majority of the remaining 2%.

Check out hundreds of photos and tons of information on the official website and there is a lot of behind the scenes coverage on the directors blog.

PA's at the Oscars

George Millar accepted the Oscar for best animated feature last night (Happy Feet). George is the leading man behind the Mad Max Trilogy and surly deserves a statue!

Children of Men failed to pick up best adapted screenplay which is a shame, but Clive Owen got to co-present the best foreign language award.

Finally, An Inconvenient Truth won best pre-apocalypse Oscar, sorry, best documentary feature (and original song).

Battletruck Trailer

Thanks to anonymous (leave your name for a shout out) for this link to a Battletruck/Warlords of the 21st Century Trailer. Before you check it out you should be warned that there are major spoilers, and more bizarrely, additional footage not found in the film, or at least not in my copy. To my knowledge there is no footage of burning cities and certainly no aircraft in the actual film! Watch out specifically for the VW Beetle flipping over and continuing on its rampage. Priceless.

More updates to the list

The list is getting huge now. Today I have added another set of box cover scans, some really nice rare ones, all UK Pal releases. Head to the list page and have a look.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force

Check out the brand new movie poster for Aqua Teen Hunger Force. Totally post-apocalyptic. We don't have the series here in the UK (I think) but there are plenty of clips on YouTube.

BIG list update and eBay mystery

I have added a whole host of films to the list page, most of which I haven't had the privilege of seeing yet, and plenty of them will be difficult to track down.

While searching for info on some of these films I did a bit of an eBay search for a film called Warlords with David Carradine. While looking I came across this - Clash of the Warlords. Despite the fact that the seller has listed most of the actors I still can't find the movie on IMDB, a problem I also had with any film by Michael J Murphy (Death Hand). Anyway, the box looks great and I think I am going to have to buy a copy. Somebody has a DVD copy available (on the 23rd Century label) so it can't be THAT obscure. Anybody out there know this one?

Rare Trident photos

Today the BBC have released a set of photos detailing life onboard a British Trident nuclear submarine. Interesting stuff - lets hope they are never needed.

Resident Evil Extinction - hot off the press!

I am yet to see the first two movies, but after seeing this brand new trailer I am suddenly interested. Check the trailer out here in all it's post-apocalyptic wasteland goodness -

The New Barbarians Trailer

The New Barbarians, or Warriors of the Wasteland in the USA. This movie typifies everything post-apocalyptic and is one of the best Italian Mad Max II rips ever, just don't take it seriously, OK! Made around the same time and with roughly the same crew as 2019 and Endgame, starring post-apocalypse stalwarts George Eastman (Endgame, 2019, Fists of Steel) and Anna Kanakis (2019) alongside Giancarlo Prete (Bronx Warriors II)and Fred 'The Hammer' Williamson, an American star who has been in a ton of movies, including the Starsky and Hutch movie a couple of years ago. This is a good (and long) trailer for the film, showing a major chunk of the action but surprisingly giving little of the plot away.

The List

Today I have added 'The List', which will one day have every wasteland based post-apocalypse movie, er, listed. So far its a work in progress, but its a start and includes a whole host of scans of my VHS and DVD box covers. I have another group of scans that will be uploaded to the list in a few days. Check out the list on the Wasteland page.

There is a more complete list externally at scifi.dead-donkey.com/ by Malignus, where you may find a few extra gems including some I still need to list, although his criteria of selection is slightly broader than mine.

New Firends

Here is a new short apocalyptic movie from YouTube. Very professionally made and an interesting story. Kudos to the makers as this is a good quality production and I really enjoyed it. About 15 minutes in duration and based around a family surviving after the spread of bird flu. Enjoy.

No Blade of Grass huge eBay price.

No Blade of Grass is a British film from 1970 about a deadly virus blighting the nation. It's one of the many films that I am keeping an eye out for. It might turn out to not be as much of a pot-apocalypse movie as it looks but that remains to be seen. There is a guy with an eye patch just like in half the PA movies ever made, so thats a good sign.

Unfortunatly trying to hunt down a copy may be difficult. The only version on eBay is a Australian DVD, currently selling for a big price here.

I wonder if this was ever released on VHS? I am not sure that the DVD in the auction looks 100% genuine either. Does anybody know?

Empire of Ash and Waterworld update

The Empire of Ash review is finished now that I have added lots of screenshots, you can read it here, and I have added lots of screenshots to the Waterworld page here too!

What film will be next? I'm no sure yet, too many to choose from, but i think its time to return to the masters in Italy...

Empire of Ash

The next review is of Empire of Ash (also known as Empire of Ash II [really] and Maniac Warriors), a Canadian PA from 1988. The review should be up today or tomorrow. The fact sheet is updated already so check it out.

Threads

Despite the popular belief that after the nukes we will all be prancing around in leather and tooled up vehicles, saving the world from marauding gangs of bikers, the truth is far from it. This site isn't here to debate nuclear war, and in fact the films I am reviewing do not tend to include the actuall events, rather the inhabitants many years later. Here, in its entirety is the BBC movie Threads, a distressing look at the period directly before and after an attack in the UK. A superb and chilling movie.

In the News

The BBC reports today on the
Norwegian government's designs for a 'Doomsday Vault', a secure installation where millions of seed samples can be stored.

"
The vault aims to safeguard the world's agriculture from future catastrophes, such as nuclear war, asteroid strikes and climate change."

Many PA's include a quest to a mythical or lost vault that contains the materials to save the world, such as the frozen fertile female in 2019, After the Fall of New York. So if you find yourself in a post-nuke barren wasteland remember to head for Svalbard if your a save the world type. Here's a map.

Warlords 3000

There are plenty of PA movies that have so completely disappeared into the sands of time that few people have ever heard of them. That's part of the excitement of collecting PA's, the finding of a new film that you never knew existed. Just last week I picked up two movies from a charity shop in London, both big box monstrosities, one called Empire of Ash and the second called The Survivalist. Both look like pure gold and I hope to review them for you in the near future.

I just came across this PA through some net searching that I have never heard of called Warlords 3000, although IMDB lists it as Dark Vengeance. The description from IMDB:

"Set in a distant post-apocalyptic future when the environment has been blasted into a poisoned wasteland and society has degenerated to rule by competing hordes of marauding gangs. There is one warrior, though, who fights to bring some semblance of peace and order to the land. When his family is brutally murdered, however, he becomes obsessed with seeking out their killer and taking his revenge."

A couple of copies are available on eBay USA but that's it, so it's gonna take some time tracking down in the UK. Does anybody know if it exists in the UK? The picture is the best I can find.

Off Topic - Hot Fuzz

I was lucky enough to attend a special pre-screening of Hot Fuzz last nigh. I have been hyped up to see this movie for quite a while now. When I get excited about a film I tend to get disappointed with the finished article, but that was not the case last night. The laughs were plentiful, the action was bold and the whole story was twisted just enough to make it unexpected. There are so many things to tell you to watch out for, such as a number of gory but somehow funny deaths and some great cameo's, but I don't want to spoil it for you. Out in the UK on Feb 14th and highly recommended.

Off topic - Snakes

I finally got around to seeing Snakes on a Plane last night. After all the original hype I was totally prepared to be let down, but upon reflection it wasn't so bad, and it did do everything that it said it would. The best laughs came from a couple of grisly deaths, and one point managed to make me jump in my seat, so it gets a thumbs up for that. If your bored, give it a go, just don't expect too much.

Waterworld

The Waterworld review is finally finished, allowing me to move on to the next film (probably Stryker) There are lots of good Waterworld links around, but I found these particually interesting, so here for you to enjoy is the entire Waterworld show from Universal Studios.

One Eyed Joe

I'm just in the process of writing the Waterworld review and had a thought. In the film, Dennis Hopper loses an eye, and this seems to be a recurring theme in PA movies that I have not noticed until now. Adam Ant also lost an eye in World Gone Wild, and I'm sure there are many more but for some reason can't think of them off the top of my head. Leave us a comment if you know of any and if I remember a few maybe I will put together a page.

Off Topic - Christine

I watched this movie last night, and thought It was good enough for a recommendation. Its a great little film where a scrawny looser falls in love with a car that has a lot more under its bonnet than you would imagine. The film was much better than I expected and has a fair few surprises, which I suppose should be expected from John Carpenter. I don't see the DVD around much, but if you do find a cheap copy I'm sure you will enjoy.

Deadly Reactor DVD

I just picked up a DVD copy of Deadly Reactor from a DVD shop in Dublin for €2.95 (roughly £2). Previously I had only ever seen this on eBay, so proof that it can be found in the wild. Keep an eye out. I will add a scan of the cover when I get a chance and some impressions of the quality of the transfer. Check out my VHS review here
